Resist the Impulse to Buy

Don’t be fooled!

All major brand stores, both online and offline, are experts at getting you to spend money on things you most likely can live without.

Big retail stores employ strategies such as product positioning, loss leaders and bundled offers to get you to spend money on the products and services that they are selling.

Can you believe that one of the major national shopping clubs purposely designed their shopping carts so deep and wide so that the consumer can fit more stuff into the shopping cart?

IT’S TRUE AND IT’S ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!

Retail stores and grocery stores employ several marketing strategies, from the design of the store, to the colors you see, to the music you hear overhead, and even to the fragrances you vaguely smell as you walk through the isles, all of this is meant to motivate the shopper to shop and spend more money!

Would you believe me if I told you that these strategies REALLY WORK?

Well, you had better, because they do!

Maybe you think you are an impulsive shopper, and it’s also quite possible that you really could not resist placing that ‘cool item’ in your cart, but then again, just maybe, the marketing strategies deployed by the retail outlet most likely gave you an additional little nudge, motivating you towards making the purchase.

Anyway, I truly appreciate the shopping experience and I raise my glass to the BIG BOX STORES for engaging and building their businesses, but YOU (if you are trying to get a handle on your credit) should stay clear of these stores and resist their expert tactics to get you to spend more money!

But if you really need to go into one of these stores to buy that one thing that you absolutely need, make a conscience decision to buy nothing more than what you went in to buy.

If you see something that you think you truly cannot live without, make a mental note of the item and the price, and then, when you get home, ask yourself, ‘Do I really need to spend my money on that stuff?’

Most times, the excitement would have worn off by the time you got home and most likely you would have forgotten about whatever it was you wanted to buy, but, if you don’t, sit down and figure out how much time it would take for you to save the money to buy that particular item.

Remember, BIG CORPORATIONS, from electronic stores, furniture stores, toy stores, auto dealers, and yes, even grocery stores, they all work very hard and invest lots of money on advertising and marketing research, all in an effort to tap into your impulse to spend your money on what they are selling.

YOU have to work twice as hard to resist your inner impulse to spend money that you do not have.
