The best credit counselors out there will say to you, ‘Don’t Spend More Money Than You Make’, and this is absolutely great advice for those individuals who do not particularly enjoy setting themselves on a budget or for those who are not so responsible and are impulsively attracted to expensive, and bright, and shiny things.
This ‘great advice’ however may sometimes fall short for some, because ‘The Act of Over-Spending’ may not just be a common ‘discipline problem’ or a simple ‘math problem’, but rather the issue may be related to a personal emotional problem, and getting to the root of this emotional problem may require some professional therapeutic help.
In some situations, overspending may be used by some Good People as a ‘drug’ to overcome or to hide the feelings of sadness, loneliness, and/or depression.
Bad things do happen to Good People and sometimes these bad things are unexpected, like an auto accident, getting a lay-off letter from your employer, or receiving a devastating diagnosis from your doctor, or the death of a close friend or a family member, and so many others.
These are examples of some bad things that can suddenly happen to Good People and these type of emotional situations cannot just be whisked away by waving your hand.
Some bad experiences are gut wrenching and emotionally challenging, and sometimes we try to mentally distract ourselves by spending and buying ourselves out of it.
We overspend and buy ourselves something ‘new’, like a pair of new shoes, a new outfit, a new car, heck, even buying something ‘used’ can sometimes make us feel better… for the moment.
Sometimes we might splurge on a weekend-get-away to a beautiful ocean front resort to recharge, and I can honestly say to you that it works, for a while, until you return from your weekend-get-away and receive your credit card bill.
A person may not even realize that they are overspending, because they are so distracted by the ‘good-feeling’ that a person may receive from charging on the credit card. This is the type of ‘good-feeling’ that a person may get from drinking a good drink or ingesting a good drug, and just like the ‘good-feeling’ from the drink or the drug that wears off the next morning, that ‘good feeling’ from charging the credit card wears off when the person gets their bill.
On the other side of the spectrum, you may have a person who simply has an egotistical desire to impress others and to show off by purchasing fancy jewelry, shiny cars, and designer clothing, so they overspend by charging their credit card up to the limit, in an effort to maintain the illusion of wealth, all the while living paycheck to paycheck.
Now by no means am I qualified to hand out mental health advice, but I do have some personal experience that might bring some value to some people.
As I was told by a very wise person a long time ago…
Live where you are… but work towards your future.
Part of making LIFE work, is to be at peace with where you are in your own life at this very moment, while at the same time, planning and working towards building the future of your dreams.
Look, we all have our own personal problems that we have to deal with, and quite frankly, our problems are insignificant to other people, and this can make anyone feel as though no one around us cares, and that our world is just crashing in.
If you are suffering from sadness, loneliness, or depression, I would suggest that you actively look to find someone within your circle that you can talk to, and if you do not have someone that you can talk to within your circle, you can always turn to your local church.
Another option that you may wish to consider is to seek out the support of professional counseling and therapy. This may help to deal with the challenges of any disruptive thoughts and emotions that you may be experiencing and may help you to move towards peace in your mind.
Peace of mind is something that we all need in order to function in this fast paced world that we live in today. Consider Online-Therapy if you feel you need help to work through any personal mental challenges.
The key here is to move towards making that first human connection so that you can prepare yourself to meet the heavy challenges that life will naturally bring upon us all.
